It was just another day, and honestly, I was feeling a bit bored since all my friends bailed on our weekend brunch. Oh, wait, have I introduced them to you? They're my childhood best friends. The five of us went to the same school, and then they all went to the same college. We like to call ourselves the 'Five Fanatics'. No matter what life throws at us, we've always stuck together. Safe to say, we're each other's ride or die. Let me introduce them in order of age.
First up is Meera Solanki, the oldest among us. She's a cybercrime investigator and ethical hacker, so basically the brainy one who keeps us secure. She might seem a bit cold and distant at first, but trust me, she's a true warrior behind the scenes, making sure we're all safe in ways we don't even notice. Of course, we all know she's got our backs, because we're like mirrors and anchors for each other. But don't let that cool exterior fool you; once you get to know her, you'll find she's one of the sweetest people you could ever meet. Just don't let my other friends hear me say that, or I'll never hear the end of it.
Next, we have our very own beacon of truth, Kavya Mehta. She's the second oldest and, yeah, she can be a real handful, but we all adore her. Kavya's an investigative journalist and documentary filmmaker. She's our moral compass, always fighting for what's right—even if it means burning herself out in the process.
Then there's Nitara Nambiar, the drama queen of the group and a total beauty from Kerala. She's super smart and was always at the top of our class. Tara is the fourth eldest and holds a PhD in Behavioural Economics. Yep, while the rest of us were scraping by in school, she was acing everything. But there's more to her story; she went through a tough breakup in college that left her a bit guarded. While we're all loud and fierce, Tara is the quiet one who listens, observes, and helps us heal with her calm presence.
Now, the youngest and perhaps the sassiest of the group is Bhairavi Desai. She's a crisis negotiator and conflict mediator. Bhairavi is always ready to jump into action to protect us—just like Kavya, she's not afraid to throw down if someone messes with her friends. She's the glue that holds us together, always planning and defending us when we need it the most.
And last but definitely not least, there's me, Dr Tanvi Rawal. I'm a forensic pathologist and the third oldest. I tend to be the emotional sceptic of the group with a sharp tongue—let's just say, I keep it real. While others are looking for balance, I often struggle to let people in, thanks to my past, but my best friends know me inside and out. So, that's us—my friends and my chaotic life.
So, back to that brunch. Those girls ditched me, and then I got an emergency call from the hospital where I work about a case we've been trying to solve with the police for weeks, but haven't made much progress on. By the way, I'm at Sunrise Hospital in Vile Parle, Mumbai—yeah, pretty posh area, which means I finally reached one of my big dreams of being independent, having my own place, and living in Mumbai.
The five of us live together in the same society: Seaview Serenity on Palm Beach Road in Navi Mumbai. Living together was a childhood dream, and when we first came to Mumbai, we booked five flats in this society while it was still under construction. It took about 3-4 years for everything to be built, during which we rented a place in Andheri. Mumbai is super expensive; it can really take a toll if you don't watch your finances, especially since the flats here cost quite a bit, which means we're still paying off loans.
That's a bit about me, and oh, my family situation is pretty complicated—that's a story for another day.
Right now, I'm waiting for my cab outside the hospital, debating what to cook for dinner since I'm not talking to those girls right now. They keep calling to apologise, but I'm not ready to forgive them easily. Out of all of us, I'm the busiest with a hectic schedule, and they totally left me hanging.
My cab showed up, and just as I was about to leave, I heard a woman scream. I jumped out and ran in her direction. There, I saw a man standing in front of her—tall, muscular, athletic, olive-skinned, with a chiselled face. My inner romantic couldn't help but admire him, but the doctor in me went on high alert, sensing something off about him. I was about to move forward to take some action, but then I noticed what was behind him, and it shook me to my core.
